China Inspection and Quarantine Inspection and Factory Certification Testing Children's Tables and Chairs Inspection Requirements and Standards

Whether children are studying at home or attending school, they need ergonomically designed desks and chairs. Domestic and international research consistently demonstrates that poorly designed student desks and chairs can directly impact adolescents' physical health and learning efficiency, leading to problems such as myopia, kyphosis, and skeletal abnormalities. To protect children's back health and enhance their learning and entertainment experiences, the European Union has issued new "Guidelines for Children's Desks and Chairs," recommending that schools purchase products that meet ergonomic standards. Children's desks and chairs designed with human factors in mind can provide children with a comfortable and safe learning and entertainment environment, improving their focus while mitigating negative impacts on their physical and mental health.

So, what are the specific technical requirements and inspection standards for children's tables and chairs? How do third-party inspection companies carry out the inspection of children's tables and chairs?

1. Scope of application of children's tables and chairs inspection

According to national standards GB/T 39223 defines the ergonomic technical requirements and testing methods for children's tables and chairs. It applies to adjustable learning tables and chairs for children aged 4 to 14 that meet basic performance, safety, and environmental standards. During factory and product inspections, strict verification is required to verify that the product falls within the scope of this standard.

2. Inspection size requirements for children's tables and chairs

2.1 Children's table size inspection requirements

  • Tabletop width : When inspecting the goods, ensure that the tabletop width B is not less than 700mm to ensure that children have sufficient space to move around when sitting.

  • Tabletop depth : The tabletop depth T1 should be no less than 450mm to support the natural working range of the arms.

  • Table height : The table height H1 should be adjustable, its range should cover 540mm, and match the elbow support height.

  • Headroom under the table : H2 must be measured during inspection and should be between 320mm and 570mm. The difference between the table height and the headroom height must not exceed 220mm.

  • Clearance depth under the table : T2 should be no less than 450mm. If a baffle is required due to structural design, it must ensure that it does not affect leg movement, and the minimum effective area depth must be no less than 380mm.

  • Tabletop inclination : The inclination adjustment range should be no less than 24°, and the adjustment mechanism must be equipped with a finger-protection safety lock. During inspection, an inclinometer with an accuracy of no less than 1° must be used for measurement.

2.2 Children's Chair Dimension Inspection Requirements

  • Seat Height : When bearing a load equivalent to the 50th percentile child's weight, the SH should be between 220mm and 460mm (320mm to 460mm for non-preschool models). Inspection requires measurements simulated in actual use.

  • Seat width : SW should be no less than 400mm. During factory inspection, it is necessary to check whether it matches the width of the child's sitting hips.

  • Seat depth : SD should be between 230mm and 470mm, and must be consistent with the horizontal distance from the front edge to the lower edge of the backrest.

  • Seat inclination angle : α should be between 0° and 4° to ensure a stable and comfortable sitting posture.

  • Backrest :

    • The backrest point height PB should be 160mm~220mm;

    • The seat back width BW is not less than 350mm;

    • The chair back tilt angle β should not be less than 80°, and should be between 90° and 95° under normal use. The angle change should increase by at least 15% when adjusting the posture.

  • Body pressure distribution : During inspection, the product must be tested using a pressure distribution instrument. The maximum pressure in the ischial tuberosity area should not be greater than 30kPa.

3. Other ergonomics and safety inspection requirements

  • Contact surface hardness : During factory inspection, the hardness of the seat and backrest must be evaluated to ensure that they provide good support and pressure comfort.

  • Contact surface feel : The material should be gentle and non-irritating, and should not be too rough or have a noticeable sense of hot or cold.

  • Adjustment performance : Each adjustment function (such as height and tilt) must be easy to operate, safe and reliable. Its effectiveness and locking performance must be repeatedly tested during third-party inspection.

  • Structural stability : The test needs to simulate the child's forward and backward tilting and posture adjustment to assess its anti-tilt ability and ensure there is no risk of tilting.

  • Appearance and safety : During inspection, focus on checking corners, folding mechanisms, holes and gaps, moving wheels, etc. to see if there are risks of pinching hands or collisions, and confirm that all exposed structures have been safely handled.

  • Accessory design : Drawers, bookshelves, storage pockets, etc. need to be arranged reasonably, and their ease of use and contribution to overall comfort need to be evaluated during factory inspection.

4. Inspection Process of Third-Party Inspection Company

Third-party inspection companies usually perform the following inspection steps based on GB/T 39223 and related international standards (such as EU EN standards):

  1. Document review : including design drawings, material reports, quality manuals and declarations of conformity;

  2. On-site factory inspection : evaluate production lines, quality management systems, raw materials and finished product inventory;

  3. Sampling inspection : Sampling according to AQL standards, conducting dimensional measurement, functional testing, adjustment performance verification and stability testing;

  4. Safety and environmental testing : Check the content of harmful substances (such as formaldehyde, heavy metals) and mechanical safety;

  5. Ergonomic compliance verification : using professional tools such as goniometers, pressure mapping systems, and simulated human models for data collection and analysis;

  6. Issue inspection report : List the conforming and non-conforming items in detail, attach pictures and data support to assist customers in making quality decisions.

Through a systematic product and factory inspection process, third-party inspection agencies can comprehensively evaluate the quality and ergonomic performance of children's tables and chairs to ensure that they truly meet the needs of children's healthy growth.
