The gram weight of fabric is an important technical indicator for knitted and woven fabrics, and is also a basic requirement in textile and garment inspection.
1. What is gram weight?
The "grammage" of a textile refers to the weight in grams, measured in a standard unit of measurement. The grammage of a fabric is generally expressed in grams per square meter. For example, if a square meter of knitted fabric weighs 200 grams, it would be expressed as 200g/m² or 200gsm.
Under the same composition conditions, the higher the weight of the fabric, the more expensive it is; the lower the weight of the fabric, the cheaper it is. Weight is an important technical indicator of textile fabrics, such as jersey, terry, PU fabrics, etc.
2. Gram Weight Meter
A fabric weight meter, also known as a textile fabric weight meter, is primarily used in the textile and leather industries to verify the weight per unit area of a product. It is suitable for cutting circular samples of various wool, cotton, chemical fiber, and knitted fabrics.
Lay the fabric to be tested flat on a special rubber mat. Place the disc sampler on the fabric and the sampling knife on the fabric. Pull out the sampling knife safety switch. Now hold the sampling knife guard with your left hand and rotate the sampling knife handle clockwise in a circle with your right hand. Sampling is complete. Return the sampling knife switch to its original position. Place the cut sample on an electronic scale, weigh the sample, and multiply by 100 to determine the sample weight per square meter. For example, if the sample weighs 1.28 grams, then 1 square meter is 128 grams.
3. Weight Example
When inspecting goods, if you find similar words in the inspection data, you should consciously check whether these data meet the requirements. These are usually very important data.
During inspection, if the factory can provide tools to engrave the unit circle, use the following method to check the data. If the factory cannot provide an engraved plate but can provide an accurate electronic scale, the inspector can also use a ruler or scissors to cut the product into a 10X10cm shape in the positive direction and place it directly on the electronic scale to obtain the gram weight value.
4. Weight calculation

Calculation of textile fabric weight (1) Gram weight/square meter: Commonly used for calculation of knitted fabrics, for example, 220g/M means that the fabric weighs 220 grams per square meter.
(2) Ounces (OZ)/square meter: This method of expression is commonly used for woven fabrics such as woolen fabrics and denim fabrics.
(3) Momme/square meter: usually used to express the weight of silk fabrics.
Common conversion: 1 ounce = 28.350 grams. Generally, the weight of woven fabrics is expressed in terms of warp and weft density. -
Calculation of silk fabric weight: expressed in (m/m).
The conversion method is as follows:
The conversion constant between gram weight and momme per square meter is: the fabric is 1 inch wide, 25 yards long, and weighs 2/3 of a day is 1m/m, which is converted to metric system: 1 inch = 0.0254 meters, 1 yard = 0.9144 meters, 1 day = 3.75 grams. Area: 1 inch x 25 yards = 0.0254 x 0.9144 x 25 = 0.58064 square meters. Weight: 2/3 of a day = 2.5 grams.
1 momme (m/m) = 2.5/0.58064 = 4.3056 g/m², conversion constant = 4.3056
The conversion of square meter weight to momme number is: momme number (m/m) = square meter weight / 4.3056
The minimum value of momme is 0.5m/m, and one decimal place is retained during calculation (the second decimal place is rounded up).
