A Comprehensive Guide to Inspection, Factory Audit and Certification for Wooden Furniture (Material, Appearance, Dimensions, Moisture Content, Panels, Paint Coating, Mechanical Properties)

In modern home life, wooden furniture is highly favored, but its quality issues cannot be ignored. This article systematically explores the key points of quality control for wooden furniture from the perspectives of inspection, factory inspection, testing, and certification, covering key items such as material usage, appearance, size, wood moisture content, particleboard/middle density fiberboard, paint film physical and chemical properties, and mechanical properties.
I. Material Quality Inspection (Basics of Inspection and Factory Audit)
Solid wood furniture: If it is explicitly stated as "all rosewood furniture", all components (except for the mirror support board) must be rosewood; if it is explicitly stated as "rosewood furniture", the external components should be solid rosewood, while the internal, back, and other concealed areas can use other types of solid wood.
Double inlay frame furniture: The wood species on the surface should be similar, there should be no significant differences in the same glued component, and coniferous and broad-leaved woods should not be mixed; the wood species of the surface plywood should be consistent, while the tree species inside are not restricted.
During the factory inspection, it is necessary to verify the supplier's timber purchase records, tree species certification (such as FSC), and the management of the timber warehouse.
II. Appearance Quality Inspection (Core of Inspection)
After processing is completed, the following defects are not allowed to exist:
The edge treatment of the artificial board components is not carried out.
The covering material has delaminated, blistered, had seams separating during assembly, and there are exposed adhesive areas.
Joint areas of components, mortise holes, loose supporting parts, separation, fracture.
The surface has uneven and asymmetrical ridges, round lines, and rounded corners.
After carving and wood processing, the flower pattern is asymmetrical, the bottom is uneven, and there are knife marks and sand particles.
The surface is not completely smooth, the inner surface is not extremely smooth, and there are sawdust and scratches on the rough areas.
After the coating process, the following defects are not allowed to exist:
There should be no significant color differences in the entire product or in the entire set.
The paint film is wrinkled, sticky and has missed some areas.
The paint film has obvious foggy light, white streaks, white spots, oily white, sagging, pinholes, brush marks, powder accumulation, impurities, scratches, blistering and peeling.
Surface dents, blemishes, scratches, cracks, chipped corners, and sharp edges on soft/hard coated materials.
The non-polished areas and the interior of the product are not clean.
After the hardware accessories are installed, the following defects are not allowed to exist:
The accessories are incomplete, and the installation holes lack the installation pieces.
Missing nails, exposed nails.
The moving parts do not start smoothly.
The accessories are not installed firmly and are loose.
Cracks around the installation holes.
The above appearance inspection items should be included in the inspection report and used as the basis for evaluating the factory's processing capabilities during the factory inspection.
III. Dimension and Quality Inspection (Tolerance and Position Tolerance)
The dimensions of furniture are divided into design dimensions, limit deviation dimensions, shape and position tolerance dimensions.
1. Design dimensions and main dimensions
Design dimensions: The dimensions (height, width, depth) indicated in the product drawing.
Main dimensions (functional dimensions): For example, the net clearance depth inside the hanging wardrobe should be ≥ 530mm; it must comply with the standards.
2. Limit Deviation
Non-folded: ±5mm, Folded: ±6mm.
3. Shape and Position Tolerances (8 items)
Warpage: When viewing the panel from the front, if the diagonal length L is less than 700mm, the allowable deviation is ≤ 1mm.
Flatness: The unevenness within the range of 0 to 150mm on the surface should be ≤ 0.2mm.
Adjacent edge perpendicularity: The difference in diagonal lengths, when L is less than 1000mm, should be ≤ 2mm; when L is 1000mm or more, it should be ≤ 3mm.
Position tolerance: The deviation of the distance between the door and the frame, or between the door and the adjacent surface of another door, should be no more than 2mm; the deviation of the distance between the drawer and the frame, or between the drawer and the door, or between the drawers and the adjacent surfaces should be no more than 1mm.
Drawer swing and sagging degree: When the pulling depth reaches 2/3 of the total length, the swing degree should be ≤ 15mm and the sagging degree should be ≤ 20mm.
The unevenness of the product's base contact with the ground is no more than 2mm.
Seam allowance: The gap between the external opening and closing components and the frame should be ≤ 2mm (or 1.5mm).
During the inspection, measuring tools such as calipers, rulers, and feeler gauges should be used, and the actual measured data should be recorded. The factory inspection should also verify whether the enterprise's testing equipment has been calibrated.
IV. Quality Inspection of Wood Moisture Content (Key Environmental Impact Indicator)
The standard stipulates: The moisture content of the wood should comply with the annual average wood equilibrium moisture content of the product's location + 1%.
In the southern region, it is approximately 16% to 18%; in the northern region, it is about 12% to 14%; and the national average is around 15%. There are significant fluctuations during the rainy/dry seasons and the winter/spring seasons.
If the distribution unit has any special requirements, they should be clearly stated in the contract.
During the inspection process, the moisture content should be measured on-site using a moisture content tester; during the factory inspection, the records of the wood drying kilns and the moisture control procedures should be reviewed.
V. Quality Inspection of Particleboard and Medium Density Fiberboard (Board Certification)
Particleboard (GB 4897-85): Free formaldehyde emission ≤ 50mg/100g.
Medium-density fiberboard: The factory moisture content is 4% to 13%; The average density deviation of each board is ≤ ±10%; The water absorption thickness expansion rate is ≤ 12%; The formaldehyde emission is ≤ 70mg/100g.
During the inspection process, it is necessary to verify the certification marks of the panels (such as CARB, E0 grade), and the supplier should be requested to provide a third-party inspection report.
VI. Physical and Chemical Quality Inspection of Paint Coating (Performance Certification)
The paint coating needs to be tested for the following 8 items:
Test items    Judgment criteria
Water resistance    Allow for slight discoloration or obvious discoloration marks
Heat resistance (85℃ hot water)    Allow for nearly complete ring marks and slight discoloration
Dry heat resistance (70℃)    Allow for nearly complete ring marks and slight changes
Adhesion    Allow for intermittent or continuous peeling along the cut marks
Abrasion resistance (2000 revolutions)    Allow for local obvious whitening
Cold and hot temperature difference resistance (60℃ ~ -40℃)    Not allowed for cracks, blisters, obvious loss of gloss and discoloration
Impact resistance    Allow for mild cracks (1~2 ring cracks or arc cracks)
Luster    Original shine 70%~79%, polished 65%~74%, filled holes matte ≤14%, visible holes matte 25%~35%
A report issued by a qualified testing institution is required during certification.
VII. Quality Inspection of Product Mechanical Properties (Strength, Stability, Durability)
According to the standards, the following inspections are conducted on tables, chairs, benches, cabinets, and beds:
Strength test: Static load test (simulating heavy load), impact test (simulating accidental impact).
Stability test: The ability of chair and stool types to withstand loads, and the anti-toppling capability of cabinet types under load or empty load conditions.
Durability test: Simulates fatigue strength under repeated usage and repeated loading conditions.
If any looseness in structure, abnormal sounds or deformation is found during the inspection, it should be judged as unqualified. The factory inspection should verify the enterprise's mechanical testing equipment and records.
Attached: Main reference standards
GB/T 8324-1995 "General Technical Conditions for Wooden Furniture"
QB/T 1951.1-94 "Quality Inspection and Quality Evaluation of Wooden Furniture"
These standards serve as the technical basis for inspection, factory verification, testing and certification processes.
Through systematic inspections (appearance, size, moisture content), factory audits (material sources, process control, equipment calibration), tests (board formaldehyde, paint film performance, mechanical strength), and certifications (product conformity certificates), the quality of wooden furniture can be ensured to be stable, safe and reliable, meeting the requirements for market access both at home and abroad.
